This unusual holiday celebrated in Russia and other states of the former USSR symbolizes dedicated service to the native country (fatherland) and acknowledgment of its chiefly military achievements.

In Russian letters it is pronounced as: “Den zashchitnika Otechestva” and is quite popular.

It’s a public holiday in spite of the fact that the date itself has no great historical significance.
