And that is why we decided to tell you a little about our Ukrainian/Russian wedding traditions.

So here is the most popular and common of them:

First of all, the Ukrainian wedding starts when the groom coming to the Ukrainian bride’s home to take her to the registry office. But for the groom it will be not so easy.

First of all, he has to redeem the bride from her relatives or bridesmaids. For redeeming he needs to participate in different tasks and answer tricky questions which are about his future wife or to pay money.

And only then, when he will pass all tasks the groom can take the bride to the registry office.

On the Slavic weddings guests always shout – Bitter!

This custom has a long history …

Earlier Russian bride bypassed guests with a tray, guests put money on it, took a glass of vodka, drank it and said: “Bitter!” – Confirming that the drink were really vodka, not the water. Then they kissed the bride. Those who did not give money just drank, saying: “Bitter!” and contented themselves with watching the others kissing the Russian bride . Gradually, this custom was replaced to a playful demanding from newly-married of more and more kisses.

Ryshnik is a traditional Ukrainian embroidered towel – an indispensable attribute of all national holidays and ceremonies.

Besides, there is a beautiful old tradition, when parents meet newlyweds with traditional Ukrainian loaf called “karavay” on the “ryshnik”. The Ukrainian bride and groom have to bite off a piece of the “karavay”, not touching it with the hands. It is believed that who bite a bigger piece, will be the head of the family.

One of the Ukrainian weddings, there is a ceremonial which shows an expression of son-in-law’s respect to his mother-in-law: son-in-law takes off an old mother-in-law’s shoes, “washes” (splashes with vodka) her feet, and puts on a new pair of shoes, dances with her fast dance to check whether new shoes fits her or not.

After the veil is removed, the bride’s head is tied with head scarf and the Russian bride goodbyes with her unmarried girlfriends in a ritual dance, covering the girlfriend’s heads with the wedding veil. Rite symbolizes the transition from her girlhood to the adult life.

Of course, on our weddings there are also traditions, borrowed from the other countries Some of them were borrowed from the United States.

For example, throwing the bride’s bouquet, taking off and throwing the bride’s garter by the groom and going on the honeymoon. Recently, an American tradition to have several bridesmaids on the wedding also became popular.

And even, it doesn’t matter what traditions will be on the wedding. The most important thing is that two hearts met each other and beat together now
