International Women’s Day is coming!

The idea of an International Women’s Day celebrated on March,8 first appeared during the period of expansion in the industrialized world. That period was famous for the active growth of population and the emerging of radical ideologies. On the 8th of March, 1857, women which worked on textile and clothing factories in NY, USA started striking against the inhumane working conditions and very low salaries.

This protest set a starting point for the movements of women’s emancipation and struggle for the women’s rights and freedoms. The protesters were hunted and dispersed by the police, but 1859 the women founded their labour union. And that happened in March again. Poor women were trying to acquire some basic rights in the working place.

The first great movement took place in March 1908 when 15 thousands of women were marching across the squares and streets of New York claiming for less work hours, higher charges, voting rights and no children labour which was a common issue at that times.  The slogan they took was “Bread and Roses” in which the bread hinted at economic stability and security and roses stood for the better life quality and conditions. The socialist party of America proclaimed the last Sunday of February to be the National Women’s day in commemoration of the March events of the past.

In 1910, Denmark - a global conference was set up by the socialists from all over the world. And this conference proposed the Women’s Day to be celebrated all over the world. The problems it aroused were international in character ans so was the holiday itself. The initiative came from Clara Zetkin, who was a well-known German socialist. This International day was dedicated to the strike of the factory workers in USA.This proposal was approved by about 100 women from 17 countries.

The United Nations General Assembly promoted the so-called United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace in 1977.The Women’s Day was decided to be internationally celebrated in recognition of the fact that prosperity, social well-being, peace and economical progress need some active participation and the equality of women’s rights. The Assembly acknowledged the women’s global contribution to the peace and security of the whole world. It was a long historic and social struggle to improve women’s lives and the holiday is now celebrated all over the world at both national and international levels.

But many countries to consider it to be an important holiday, they just remember it due to some history events. But the Russians are known for their serious and attitude to this holiday. It is analogized with the day of all women, without which “there wouldn’t be light on the earth” and the stars wouldn’t shine so bright”.

Woman daySo this day is romanticized and over-exaggerated in Russia, which doesn’t make it less pleasant for Russian ladies.

Russian women dress up in their best holiday clothing, make a hair-do and bright holiday make-up and get prepared to receive hundreds of complements, flowers and gift on this special day.

The struggle for peace, equality and development isn’t so important any more. But some progress concerning the above mentioned issues has been made. Women received more voting, labour, social and educational rights in the recent centuries on the international level. The legislative rights are also promised to be equal between men an women in most countries. There are more politicians, economists and important public women in all countries today. Women are participating in society more freely. We all remember the beautiful and smart woman named Julia Timoshenko which was promoted the prime-minister in Ukraine not so long ago.

Still nowhere in the world women are considered to have the completely equal rights with men. Statistics says that women in average learn 30-40 per cent less than men. Even in our modern civilized world women often become victims of violence at work and at home and their lives aren’t of full value without men by their side.

So dear men, take care of your precious women, love and pamper them and they will make you happy in return!

The general congratulation on the Women’s Day sounds like: “To the most wonderful, smart, caring, kind-hearted and cheerful woman in the whole world!”. But try to make your congratulation not too banal and dull. Surprise your sweetheart with your own poem or with a cake cooked with your own hands.

For many years in the states of the former USSR this holiday was an unusual combination of the Valentine’s day and the Mother’s day. The day itself comes to the beginning of spring which makes its spring spirit of high importance. The flowers and  presents should be associated with spring, freshness, sun, green grass and amazing trinkets women are going crazy about. The best flowers on this holiday are tulips, lilies-of-the-valley, snowdrops and other first spring flowers. Roses and orchids are also suitable.
